This was one of those shoots that surprised me with how cool it turned out. My original plan was to shoot outdoors, using some nearby motel exteriors with really great colors. But, spring in Oregon has been truly crazy this year, so the weather foiled my plans. On the day of the shoot, we got a mix of sun, rain, and hail, and it seemed to change every 10 minutes!
I was disappointed that my original vision didn’t work out, but it turned into a good opportunity to test myself by coming up with a lighting scheme on the fly, while the girls were in hair and makeup.
Several tops were shipped to me by independent designer Erika Hendrix, and she gave me full creative license for shooting them, which is always a fun situation. She makes some very cute clothes, and also takes commissions for one-of-a-kind creations!
Makeup and hair were courtesy of Amity Givens, whom Ben and I originally met in San Francisco a couple years ago, while we were traveling in the area. She worked with us while we were there, and she was terrific both as a stylist and as a model. When she told us that she’d relocated to Portland, we were definitely excited to work with her again, and I can safely say that she never disappoints!
Credit is also due to models Leesa and Jillian, who easily became my two new favorite models, after this shoot. Jillian moved amazingly and found the light in every shot, and Leesa had great intensity and worked some truly awesome deconstructed poses. They were both a real pleasure to work with, and they’re definitely on my short list for people to work with again in the future.
In the end, everything came together into some very cool shots. Some of the images came out *so* ’80s that I can’t help loving them, and the whole team was excited about them, too.
There are plenty more images after the cut… and I’m sure there are even more that I love and just haven’t gotten to yet.
