A Vintage-Inspired Fall Collection – fashion, commercial, and product photography in Portland, OR

A few days ago, local designer Alyson Clair unveiled her latest collection for Fall 2009 on her web site, so now we finally get to share some of the photos! 

We shot outside an old Vavoline building in an industrial area of North Portland, and it was a cool spot, but it also had its challenges. If we’d started shooting too early, and the outdoor light would be too harsh, but if we waited too long, the neighboring buildings would cast a huge shadow across our setting. Throw in some partly-cloudy conditions that had the sun passing behind clouds periodically, and things get a bit tricky.

That meant we had to work fast and be ready to make quick changes, which is, fortunately, never a problem when we’re doing the shooting. We shot 3 different models in multiple outfits, and finished with plenty of time to savor our Saint Cupcakes (courtesy of Alyson), and then head out to enjoy the rest of a gorgeous day.

Monday Snapshot: Fall clothing gets Sweet – commercial and fashion photography in Portland, Oregon

It’s a big week for Portland fashion… because Portland Fashion Week begins in just two days! We’re particularly excited for PFW’s Thursday night showing, because one of the three designers selected for the Emerging Designers showing is one of our beloved fashion clients: Mira Fannin of Sweet Skins! Word is, she’ll be debuting an all-new collection of delicious denim, and we’re excited for her and curious to see what’ll be coming down the runway. 

So, today’s Snapshot is a peek at the rack of clothing samples from our Fall ’09 photoshoot with Sweet Skins. Just a little homage to Fall Fashion and to Mira’s work, because it’s finally starting to feel like fall, and slipping on some warm and comfortable (and, of course, fashionable) threads is sounding pretty excellent today.

After taking a fairly long break from straight-size fashion collaborations, we finally found some time to work with an awesome team of ladies on some soft and lovely fashion images! We were lucky enough to have the talents of Ambrosia Carey–our hairstylist for our November 2008 PLUS Model Magazine editorial–on hair and makeup, two skilled models from Portland agencies, and two amazing local designers!

Here are a couple of the images we’ve cooked up so far, featuring one-of-a-kind designs by Emily Sunnell. Her line, Emilia Kaye, is focused around romantic and raw garments made from reconstructed clothing, and she loves putting energy into quirky and unique details that speak volumes.

If you’re a fan of Last Thursday on Alberta, keep an eye out for these two girls: you might see Sofie selling her own works, and Iris bakes some killer gluten-free cookies! (we should know, she brought some to the shoot!)

Creative, Conceptual Portraits

Conceptual photography is some of the most fun work we get to do: it gives us the chance to really explore the looks we can achieve with lighting, style, and setting. And when we can share that with you through a creative portrait? Even better!

We had the chance to take things towards the dark side, when we got together with Annalee, Tony, and Marius for this Alternative-Bride theme. We had the talents of Sabrina Cayne with us for makeup and styling, and we took this shoot to a great location, as the sun was getting low in the sky. Shooting outdoors in such low light can yield some very cool looks, and the clouds in the sky that evening were an amazing fit with the moody feel of the concept.

And, yes, we can do shots like these, or something completely different, for you! Include makeup and hair in your portrait package, and we can create a great variety of looks. Add on a wardrobe stylist, and there’s a whole wealth of ideas we can mine.

Fabulous fashion portraits!

This full-figured fashion session started because of a gorgeous woman… who doesn’t model! Alexis came to us looking to celebrate her beauty in full-on fashion style, and since we love to push the boundaries of plus-size fashion, we knew we’d love this assignment.

We brought together a great team for this session, so we were lucky enough to have makeup and hair by Ashlee Murr—the same wonderful artist who did makeup for our November 2008 PLUS Model Magazine editorial—and the wardrobe styling talents of Oscar Milano Mai, who came in from Seattle to work with us! Oscar has designed his own collections and styled for numerous photoshoots in Seattle, and his bold use of color and style proved perfect for this session.

You’ve already seen a sneak peek of our session with Alexis, so here are a few captures of the other diverse and gorgeous looks we shot during our session!

A spring cold has hit us, but we have a lot of great shoots to tell you about. We’re soldiering on, sniffling our way through a speedy recovery and a lot of photo processing, so we’ll definitely be sharing new work with you soon!

Fashion magazine photography

Our two-page spread for MF Magazine, which was originally shot last summer, is finally out in the world, as part of Issue #9! The fashion world always likes to think ahead, so shooting fall and winter layouts six (or more!) months in advance is pretty much par for the course.

We shot this in a local coffee shop–in pretty cramped quarters!–and worked with six models in the same shot. Some of the models had prior experience, others were newer to modeling, and, since we were hoping to fit over 20 giveaway items into the spread, one of our models was literally recruited on the spot, while hanging out at the coffee shop! It was definitely a fun shooting experience with its share of unexpected twists.

Fashion hair and makeup photography

Here’s another shot of our recent work with Paul Kovacevic of Blue Chair Salon. This was a bold, contemporary haircut with geometric shaping, so we placed light on both sides of the head, to draw even more shine out of the perfectly straightened hair. The soft pinks and strong blacks make for a very cool, retro-inspired look!

Hair salon marketing

We recently worked with Paul Kovacevic of Blue Chair Salon, shooting several different models, each with a unique haircut, color, and style applied by Paul himself. The photos we created will not only be submitted to hair industry publications, and industry competitions such as NAHA, but they’ll also give a much more polished and stylish look to the salon’s online and print marketing efforts in 2009!

Each photo was lit to bring out the shine, color, and texture of Paul’s masterful cut and color work, and each model was given her own unique styling theme, so we quickly communicate the diversity, creativity, and personalized beauty of what the Salon can achieve when styling its clients. This is just one of the photos we shot for the Salon’s new looks for 2009.
