Twilight Picnic

We had a really fun family shoot yesterday, with a mother and daughter in matching retro outfits, and gorgeously-detailed, pinup-inspired hair. We did some studio shots first, and we were a little concerned that the daughter would be shy in front of the camera, but she surprised us by being completely into the shoot. She even hit some adorable pinup poses of her own!

The really interesting wrinkle, however, came towards the end of the shoot, when we ventured outside. They’d brought some really cute props for a picnic theme, and we wanted to do that set outdoors, but the sun was getting pretty low in the sky by the time we finished in the studio. But, my brain was saying, “we must have grass! Trees! Nature!” so I grabbed the power pack and we took off for the park post haste.

The sky at twilight added a lot of interest, and it made for a pretty unique picnic shot. I knew that we’d already taken some great studio shots, but I was really happy that we were able to give them something a bit more unique, too. The two of them also had a great energy that came through in all the shots, so it was a lot of fun to just work with them and see them interact!

These folks are also the proud owners of Cherry Redd, a retro boutique with plenty of fun clothes and accessories, both for kids and adults. If you’re passing through Salem, be sure to pay them a visit! (feel free to tell them we sent you!)

  1. Great shots. The sky is great, particularly in the second shot. Really fantastic captures.
