Pumpkins and Falling Leaves – portrait and artistic photography in Portland, OR

We got together with Alyson and Jeff on a chilly fall day, to snag some casual engagement photos! They took advantage of our Try Us On special by scheduling their engagement shoot with us, and because they also booked us for their wedding, they got to keep the engagement photos at no charge. (Hint: you can still get in on this special, just by mentioning that you saw it on our blog! Be sure to contact us to book an engagement portrait session, before our wedding calendar fills up.)

The weather at the park was beautiful, and there was plenty of fall color to play with… and we even had pumpkins on hand to pose with! They started the session trying to look more sedate and composed for the photos, but Jeff–or as Alyson likes to call him, “El Jefe”–is apparently pretty notorious for not keeping a straight face in photos. But, we LOVE it when our portrait clients loosen up and clown around during a session, so we captured some parent-pleasing photos, and the spontaneous shots that showed them as the clever, funny, and utterly non-serious people they are when they’re together. πŸ˜‰

We’re really jazzed to be the photographers shooting Alyson and Jeff’s wedding this coming Fall. It’s shaping up to be a blast, and we’re sure it’ll be anything but ordinary… just how we like it.

Help-Portrait PDX – portrait and artistic photography in Portland, OR

Last week was especially busy for us, but I (Sarah) still found room in my schedule to be a part of the Help-Portrait event held here in Portland last Saturday. The mission of Help-Portrait? Find a needy person, take their portrait, create a print and give it to that person. Helping one person just wasn’t enough, though, and after several planning meetings and a flurry of e-mails and Google spreadsheets, we had over 30 volunteers coming together to shoot portraits for dozens of people in need!

I could only stay for the first half of the day, but the energy of the experience lifted my spirits all weekend. The atmosphere was warm and collaborative, and considering how many professional photographers were in the room, the space was ego-free. We’d share tips and chat about gear, lend a hand holding a reflector or testing lights, and back each other up whenever someone needed an assist. The volunteers who weren’t photographers were on-point and ready to help with hair and makeup, contacting organizations, sorting through images, or even just staying with folks who were waiting to have their portrait taken, so they wouldn’t feel lost in the shuffle. It was all about the people we were helping, and making it a positive experience for them.

No matter how many times I see it, it’s always a little surprising for me, to see the faces of the less-fortunate. When I visited China back in the summertime, I found myself shocked at the extreme circumstances of some of the disadvantaged people I encountered on the streets. At Help-Portrait, however, those less-fortunate faces didn’t look much different from my own. A lot of people, from all walks of life, have come up on tough circumstances these days, and it’s not hard to see it, if you look around you. Still, there were some very sweet families and freakin’ adorable kids who came to get their portraits done, and it was a lot of fun to meet all of these people, and watch them truly enjoying with their photo sessions and interacting with all the volunteers who came out.

Honestly, it’s hard to know what else to say that would even begin to encompass this experience, for someone who wasn’t there… it was just an amazing event all around, and watching the slideshow this morning was such a treat. I’m absolutely doing this again next year, and I know it’s only going to grow bigger and better!

Here’s the slideshow, with plenty of photos (including quite a few of my own) documenting the events of the day. It’s always enjoyable for me to simply watch people being themselves, and capture the bright moments. πŸ™‚

Engagement Special: Try us on! – portrait and wedding photography in Portland, Oregon

It’s been a busy week, especially now that Ben’s down with a cold, but we’re just popping in to alert our friends in the blogosphere about our new Try Us On special for engagements. We know that booking your photographer often turns out to be one of the toughest choices you’ll make when you’re planning your wedding, so we’re hoping to make that choice a little easier for you.

All you need to do is:

Book an engagement session with us, between now and November 30th. We’ll do your portrait session (sessions start at just $199), you’ll get your photos, and you’ll get the chance to try us on, and see if we’re a good fit for you.

Then, when you book your wedding with us, we’ll discount the price of your engagement session from your wedding package. Then, you’ll have an awesome wedding photographer booked, and you’ll be getting engagement photos you love for FREE. Pretty excellent deal, right?

We have dates available for portrait sessions between now and the end of November, so get in touch with us, and we can fill you in on all the details.Β

A Celebration – fresh portrait photography in Portland, OR

We recently did a session with Jennifer, a lively woman who was never shy with a smile or a laugh. Her significant other booked a session with us as a surprise for her, as a sort of celebration of beauty. She’s currently undergoing chemotherapy, and she was very open about her story and her struggle, but she was full of life and energy throughout the entire session. It was a joy working with her, and we’re hoping for all the best for her.

Creative, Conceptual Portraits

Conceptual photography is some of the most fun work we get to do: it gives us the chance to really explore the looks we can achieve with lighting, style, and setting. And when we can share that with you through a creative portrait? Even better!

We had the chance to take things towards the dark side, when we got together with Annalee, Tony, and Marius for this Alternative-Bride theme. We had the talents of Sabrina Cayne with us for makeup and styling, and we took this shoot to a great location, as the sun was getting low in the sky. Shooting outdoors in such low light can yield some very cool looks, and the clouds in the sky that evening were an amazing fit with the moody feel of the concept.

And, yes, we can do shots like these, or something completely different, for you! Include makeup and hair in your portrait package, and we can create a great variety of looks. Add on a wardrobe stylist, and there’s a whole wealth of ideas we can mine.

Get more from your portrait session

Having your portrait taken can be an enjoyable and special event, but if you’re not used to being photographed, you might feel a little nervous out about your session. There’s no need to worry, though: when you choose a good professional photographer, it’s our job to make sure you look and feel great in your photos. But, with a little bit of planning, you can help make sure that you get the most out of your session.

435359225_Q9rUm-M Be fed, be relaxed, and BE RESTED. It’s in your best interest to be feeling energetic and in a good mood when you have a session with us. We want you to have fun during your session, and it’s no fun to pose for photos when you’re tired, stressed out, and your stomach’s growling!

Kids are even more sensitive to hunger and tiredness, so it’s even more important for family photos. Even if you’re willing to grin and bear a bit of discomfort, they might not be. If you’re including young children on your shoot, make sure to schedule around naps, and bring a quick snack just in case the shoot runs a bit longer than the kids are expecting.

Pick your perfect outfit. Start thinking about what you want to wear for your shoot before you get there. If you’re doing an individual session, it’s never a bad idea to bring a few different outfits, and shy away from heavy patterns or company logos. If you’re doing a group portrait, consider coordinating the styles or colors of your outfits with each other. If you’re doing a more dressed-up shoot, the right shoes and accessories can complete the look.

But, the most important thing is to wear something you feel good in! Choose clothes that you love, and that fit and flatter you, and you can’t go wrong.

Consider bringing a friend… as long as they’re the right one. We’re always open to having friends and family accompany you on individual portrait shoots. If having your best friend, boyfriend, or parent with you will help relax you and make the session more enjoyable for you, then don’t hesitate to ask them along for your session.

Before you do, though, consider the other side of the issue: is this person going to distract you during the session? Will you feel uncomfortable having your portrait taken while they’re watching? If you think having extra people around will make you nervous, stress you out, or constantly interrupt your session, it’s okay to ask them to step out of the shoot for a while. We have plenty of photobooks for them to flip through while they wait. πŸ˜‰

Don’t be shy about what you want! Everyone wants something a little different from their portrait shoot, be it funny, spontaneous, glamorous, or something else entirely. No matter what you’re looking for, if there’s something you specifically want from your portraits, tell your photographer. Different types of shots may require completely different approaches, and if we don’t know what you want, then you may not get it.

Also, don’t be afraid to suggest an idea, even if you think it’s “weird.” If you’re working with a good photographer who’s delivering a personalized experience, chances are they’ll be open to, and even excited about trying something different from the norm. We want you to go home happy at the end of the session, so speak up! We’re ready to listen.

Consider booking a makeup artist! Sometimes, if you’re having trouble getting relaxed, having a makeup artist on-hand can help you feel fabulous, and settle into being comfortable in front of the camera. It can be fun to feel pampered while your hair and makeup is worked on, and you don’t need to worry about looking overdone or costumey, either: quality, professional makeup artists like the ones we work with know exactly how to highlight you and keep you looking fresh, so your natural beauty can shine through.

Don’t worry, just HAVE FUN! Life isn’t perfect, and neither is a portrait shoot, so you are occasionally going to blink or make expressions that aren’t so flattering. BUT, we want you to feel the freedom to experiment, and there’s no need to stress about how the final photos will look! Remember that you’ll be able to choose the shots that you like best, and nobody’s going to see the “bloopers” if you don’t want them to. So, relax, have fun, and get creative… just let your energy come to life on camera, and we’ll capture something wonderful.

Zombie Prom Creative Portrait

If you hadn’t heard, last weekend was the 2nd annual Zombie Prom! It was time for hundreds of Portlanders put on their shiny shoes, satin gowns, and yes, zombie face paint, and head over to the Bossanova Ballroom to dance the night away in undead style.

With these quirky parameters, a standard prom portrait wasn’t enough for this couple: we met up before the event to do an on-location creative portrait shoot with them, in their dressy formalwear, fancy hair, and a full makeup look provided by the Zombie Prom makeup team. We had our portable lighting equipment on site, so we played on the special effects makeup with lighting that was more spooky than usual!

Family pregnancy portrait

Abibat and Ali had a wonderful connection with each other during our pregnancy session with them, which made it great fun to shoot. They brought in an amazing embroidered white fabric they’d imported, which made for some truly beautiful photos of the two of them together.

But, we also have a weakness for the more spontaneous shots, so here’s a not-so-serious one that was easily one of our favorites.
