Snapshot: Musical Expression

Last week, we had the pleasure of trekking down to Eugene to document the happenings at the Oregon Leadership Network’s Spring Conference, and the lunch break had a particularly interesting surprise for us: a performance by Mariachi del Sol, a student mariachi band from nearby Springfield High School! Word is, the group came together after seeing and being inspired by the only other school mariachi group in Oregon (from Woodburn High School). After a lot of fundraising and practice time, Mariachi del Sol is getting to be well-known around the Eugene/Springfield community, and is spreading an infectious combo of music and Hispanic culture.

We were happy to be working with the folks behind the scenes at A Naughty Li’l Queer Cabaret this past Sunday!

This was a high-energy group of friendly people who donated their time, effort, and resources to put on a spectacular show as a benefit for Basic Rights Oregon. If you support basic rights for people from all walks of life, be sure to check out their web site and get involved with the effort!

And, of course, images are now online, so have a look and see what you missed! ** This is an 18+ event, so if you’re browsing with the kids, you have been warned!

A High-Flying Event: US Wushu Center

Enko was on hand this past Sunday at NW Portland’s US Wushu Center, for their post-remodeling, Grand Opening Celebration. They’ve been running an extensive program in T’ai Chi and Wushu for 12 years, but the Grand Opening included an unveiling of the new facilities, and the introduction of a new Chinese language program.

Needless to say, it was an exciting time for everyone in the school, and the event included a performance from their demo team. It was a treat to see the diverse group of practitioners performing slow and controlled arts, as well as fast-kicking, high-flying acrobatics. There’s definitely room for people of all ages!

A few favorites are here on the blog, of course… the rest are available online.

If you’re interested in martial arts, be sure to check out the school. They have some of the most talented and renowned Chinese martial arts instructors Portland has to offer, so rest assured, they really know their stuff. 🙂
