Work or Play?

Yeah, we know: we’ve been having good times out there doing our work, and there are plenty of blog posts that we should probably write about it… and we’ll certainly do that, before long. But with this pitch-perfect weather, who’s spending their spare moments thinking about work?

The weather has made for some great shooting, both on-the-job and off, so here’s a shot from the Oregon Coast, as a reminder to a moment on this pretty Monday, let your mind wanter off the job for just a minute, and savor what might be waiting for you just outside your window.

Snapshot: Goodbye, 2009 – portrait and artistic photography in Portland, OR

After an awesome, surprise-filled, and at times exhausting year, it was high time we took a break! So, Ben and I each spent the holidays with a bit of travel, a lot of family and friends, some amazing edibles, and very little internet. πŸ˜‰

We’ve already welcomed 2010, and it’s looking like a big year already! But, 2009 deserves a little farewell, so this seemed appropriate: a photo from the last bit of shooting I did in 2009. I was rushing northward, trying to get through the mountains before the big snows came in, but I passed near Shasta Lake and couldn’t resist the opportunity I was seeing through my car window. I got off at the next exit, and took 5 minutes to shoot a few frames, before continuing my journey up I-5 towards Portland.

I honestly couldn’t have timed it better. The forecast was stormy and snowy, and it had rained quite a bit further south, but when I got up into the mountain passes, it was gorgeous. WORTH IT. Happy new year!

Snapshot: Taking an Interest – portrait and artistic photography in Portland, OR

We’re still winding down after a busy day at the Holiday Cravings Shopping Party, and we’ll have photos from the event soon… but today we’re feeling like it’s high time for a snapshot.

We had the chance to see Springfield School District Superintendent Nancy Golden in action, while shooting on-location in Springfield several weeks ago. She has a reputation for being an active and forward-thinking educator: not only does she bring other educators together, but she also makes sure to stay in touch and relate with the students. More about the work that she and other educators are doing to strengthen public schools is in the latest issue of Education Northwest Magazine.

(and yes, you can book with us for photojournalistic promotional and event photography… we shoot in a variety of situations, for people from all walks of life. Just e-mail or call us to get the details!)

Snapshot: An Artist as Art – portrait and artistic photography in Portland, OR

I’ll confess: as beautiful and interesting as China was, I found myself more interested in the people than in the landscapes and buildings. The art and architecture of Asia has always been interesting to me, but the character of the people is something you don’t find as easily in books or libraries.

One of the really cool things about Beijing is how active the parks are. You’ll see people grouping together for dancing, activities, or just exercising, at almost any hour of the day. Even at sightseeing locations like the Summer Palace, there were people throughout the space enjoying the environment and the scenery.

I caught a shot of a calligraphy artist doing his thing, and he was just one of several capturing the mellow waters and cooling breezes of the artificial lake near the Summer Palace.

It’s Monday again, and today’s Snapshot is looking back on China, at a couple of policemen who were just doing their job, keeping up security outside the Forbidden City.Β For most of us, Monday means going back to work. Most folks aren’t too enthusiastic about saying goodbye to the weekend and hello to the workweek, but if every day was a weekend, would we enjoy them as much?

Monday Snapshot: Making Portland (and the world) Better – event and artistic photography in Portland, OR

We’re coming off of Portland Fashion Week’s closing night of all-eco-friendly clothing designers, heading towards Blog Action Day, getting familiar with even more of the awesome local businesses in Portland, and all of this has us thinking about making the world a little bit better than it is. Issues like climate change, sustainable practices, and building a thriving local community are important to a lot of us, but we don’t always feel that we can do a lot to help with that. It’s easy to buy the big-box products, to do the one-stop shopping thing, to say that we’re too busy to do more, and to even neglect ourselves because other things seem more “important.”

It’s easy to forget that social change isn’t just a matter of some Important Person making a grand decree: it’s a series of small steps from a lot of different people. Your choice to switch to renewable power, or get rid of your excess junk on Freecycle instead of tossing it in the trash, or even shop at the local farmer’s market may not seem like a life-altering decision, but when one person makes that choice, others follow. One person becomes several, becomes dozens, hundreds, thousands… and that’s when we start to see the benefits.

So, with that in mind, today’s Snapshot is just a reminder that, no matter how small we feel, we can effect change and have a positive effect on the people and community around us. This is a young girl–smaller than a lot of us who are reading this–who took time out of her day on a drizzly Saturday, to join her family in doing some community cleanup at Lane Elementary School in SE Portland. In just a few short hours, this girl, and a few dozen volunteers from Portland own Education Northwest, cleaned up the school and its grounds, and made a HUGE difference for all the kids who go to school there.

Monday Snapshot: an Even-more-bikeable Portland – event photography in Portland, OR

Here’s a quick snapshot of Portland Mayor Sam Adams, giving a speech on the PSU campus just a few weeks ago, to celebrate the opening of Portland’s first Cycle Track! The new track runs in Southwest Portland, and it’ll hopefully make our already bike-friendly town an even better place to ride.Β

Monday Snapshot: Duck!

One of the great things about Portland is the amazing range of things that happen in this town! Just this past weekend, there was Sunday Parkways in SE Portland, the Hawthorne Street Fair, the kickoff for Try Vegan Week, and a host of other events that were fun, and sometimes even free.

This image came from one Portlander’s fun idea for a birthday celebration: a Rubber Duck Race! The group spontaneously set up shop at Lovejoy Fountain on a Sunday afternoon, and had some good times running the colorful little ducks down the waterfalls and into the fountain.

Monday Snapshot: Silken Threads

At a silk factory in China, where workers take individual, empty silk worm cocoons, soak them in water, and unravel them into usable threads. The cocoons that are unraveled for use in silk clothing are spun by the worm from one very long, thin, white thread of silk. It’s so thin that, from some angles, you can hardly even see it!

Monday (?) Snapshot

Okay, so it’s actually Tuesday, but we had a very full Monday… forgive us the slight interruption.

For Oregon people who are primed for much rainier, gloomier weather, last week’s heat was approaching unbearable! But, when you don’t see blue skies very often, it’s hard to resist them even on melty-hot days. If you’re lucky, maybe you can find a shady Portland park, hop on the swings, and create your own breeze. πŸ˜‰
