Help-Portrait PDX – portrait and artistic photography in Portland, OR

Last week was especially busy for us, but I (Sarah) still found room in my schedule to be a part of the Help-Portrait event held here in Portland last Saturday. The mission of Help-Portrait? Find a needy person, take their portrait, create a print and give it to that person. Helping one person just wasn’t enough, though, and after several planning meetings and a flurry of e-mails and Google spreadsheets, we had over 30 volunteers coming together to shoot portraits for dozens of people in need!

I could only stay for the first half of the day, but the energy of the experience lifted my spirits all weekend. The atmosphere was warm and collaborative, and considering how many professional photographers were in the room, the space was ego-free. We’d share tips and chat about gear, lend a hand holding a reflector or testing lights, and back each other up whenever someone needed an assist. The volunteers who weren’t photographers were on-point and ready to help with hair and makeup, contacting organizations, sorting through images, or even just staying with folks who were waiting to have their portrait taken, so they wouldn’t feel lost in the shuffle. It was all about the people we were helping, and making it a positive experience for them.

No matter how many times I see it, it’s always a little surprising for me, to see the faces of the less-fortunate. When I visited China back in the summertime, I found myself shocked at the extreme circumstances of some of the disadvantaged people I encountered on the streets. At Help-Portrait, however, those less-fortunate faces didn’t look much different from my own. A lot of people, from all walks of life, have come up on tough circumstances these days, and it’s not hard to see it, if you look around you. Still, there were some very sweet families and freakin’ adorable kids who came to get their portraits done, and it was a lot of fun to meet all of these people, and watch them truly enjoying with their photo sessions and interacting with all the volunteers who came out.

Honestly, it’s hard to know what else to say that would even begin to encompass this experience, for someone who wasn’t there… it was just an amazing event all around, and watching the slideshow this morning was such a treat. I’m absolutely doing this again next year, and I know it’s only going to grow bigger and better!

Here’s the slideshow, with plenty of photos (including quite a few of my own) documenting the events of the day. It’s always enjoyable for me to simply watch people being themselves, and capture the bright moments. 🙂

A Vintage-Inspired Fall Collection – fashion, commercial, and product photography in Portland, OR

A few days ago, local designer Alyson Clair unveiled her latest collection for Fall 2009 on her web site, so now we finally get to share some of the photos!

We shot outside an old Vavoline building in an industrial area of North Portland, and it was a cool spot, but it also had its challenges. If we’d started shooting too early, and the outdoor light would be too harsh, but if we waited too long, the neighboring buildings would cast a huge shadow across our setting. Throw in some partly-cloudy conditions that had the sun passing behind clouds periodically, and things get a bit tricky.

That meant we had to work fast and be ready to make quick changes, which is, fortunately, never a problem when we’re doing the shooting. We shot 3 different models in multiple outfits, and finished with plenty of time to savor our Saint Cupcakes (courtesy of Alyson), and then head out to enjoy the rest of a gorgeous day.

If you like what you see, you can pick up these vintage-inspired, figure-flattering pieces at several boutiques in town. Check out the Clair Vintage Inspired web site for a closer look!

Back to Fashion – commercial and fashion photography in Portland, OR

After taking a fairly long break from straight-size fashion collaborations, we finally found some time to work with an awesome team of ladies on some soft and lovely fashion images! We were lucky enough to have the talents of Ambrosia Carey–our hairstylist for our November 2008 PLUS Model Magazine editorial–on hair and makeup, two skilled models from Portland agencies, and two amazing local designers!

Here are a couple of the images we’ve cooked up so far, featuring one-of-a-kind designs by Emily Sunnell. Her line, Emilia Kaye, is focused around romantic and raw garments made from reconstructed clothing, and she loves putting energy into quirky and unique details that speak volumes.

Models: Sofie (Mode) and Iris (Ryan Artists)

If you’re a fan of Last Thursday on Alberta, keep an eye out for these two girls: you might see Sofie selling her own works, and Iris bakes some killer gluten-free cookies! (we should know, she brought some to the shoot!)

Labels for Love Event Proofs

We were happy to contribute to the Labels for Love Benefit Fashion Show and Silent Auction last Friday, and were amazed by all the clothing they’d pulled together for the event! There was a great variety of clothing items for sale and auction, for women, men, and kids, and the runway show highlighted complete outfits from some amazing name-brand labels. Visit their MySpace to learn more about Youth Empowered By Action, and be sure to lend your support on their future efforts to help the less fortunate!

And, if you want to see some of what you missed, check out proofs from the fashion show!

Friday: Labels for Love!

They say the holidays are a season for giving, so in the spirit of that, we’re donating our time to Labels for Love, a fashion show and silent auction benefit! Over $31,000 in donations have been raised for auction items and raffle prizes, including clothing items from a variety of nationally-recognized labels, and all proceeds from the event will go to the Oregon Food Bank!

We  definitely encourage you to check out the event, and help the hungry with your holiday shopping dollars! We’ll be serving as official photographers for the event, and we’ll also have a booth with information about our portrait and wedding packages, so feel free to stop by and ask us more about what we do.

We also recently did a promotional shoot for the show, featuring actual clothing items donated for the event. Special thanks goes to our amazing team of professionals who, like us, donated their time and resources to make this promo shoot look its best!

Reviving with Revivall

We’re just now beginning to process the final photos of Revivall Clothing’s Portland Fashion Week collection, thanks to a *very* busy couple of months on both our parts! We were booked up with wedding processing, senior portraits, and myriad other shoots, while she was working hard preparing her own storefront for a November 1st opening.

Now that we have final selections from Revivall at last, we’re working our way through the selection. Here was one of our favorite shots; there are plenty more on the way!

Revivall at Portland Fashion Week

We stopped in at the 2nd night of Portland Fashion Week to support some of our favorite designers! We especially want to mention Revivall Clothing, whose work made its first-time debut at PFW, and definitely made a memorable impression!

If you missed the show, stay tuned to our blog, because we’ll be sharing some amazing photos of “The Black and Blue Royal Circus,” Revivall’s all-new collection featured in PFW! For now, enjoy this sneak preview: an invitation we made with one of the photos from the shoot.

This Weekend: Rock The Runways

If you’re looking for some fun on Saturday, check out the third edition of Portland’s rock-and-roll runway show! This show is built by some of the fine folks from Portland Fashion Week and Style Is So You, so it’s sure to be a big production!

AND, the show also includes some of the awesome people we’ve most loved to collaborate with! There will be fabulous new creations from Revivall Clothing, MEWV Sustainables, and also from newcomer betsy and iya, whom we’ll be shooting with in the not-too-distant future! You’ll also see some of our favorite models, like Erin, Jillian, and several other awesome ladies whom we love, but haven’t had the chance to blog about yet!

And hey, there’ll also be some excellent local bands to enjoy, so you’ll get a party along with your runway show. Be there this Saturday, 7pm, at The Civic!

Fashion Rebels!

One of our Sunday bookings was the first annual Rockin’ Rebelz of Fashion Show, and we had a blast at this retro-themed event! Five fresh designers, a bevy of awesome models, plenty of giveaways, and two excellent bands made for a show that was not to be missed!

Fortunately, if you did miss it, you can see some of the action in our photo gallery. The team at Sweetz Clothing plans to put on another show in the Fall, so keep your eyes peeled for that one, too.

Rockin’ Rebelz of Fashion

It’s been a busy week, but we wanted to pop in and let y’all know about the upcoming Rockin’ Rebelz of Fashion Show, this Sunday. We were lucky enough to connect up with the awesome folks at Sweetz Clothing Co. a couple months ago, and had a great shoot with them for their Spring line, so we’re thrilled to be part of the team for their runway show, too!

This week’s Portland Mercury also featured a column about the event (along with one of our photos from our shoot with Sweetz Clothing!), so it’s sure to be a blast!
