Spring is here! (mostly) – portrait and artistic photography in Portland, OR

It’s been a busy few weeks! I’ve been on the road quite a bit, and since Ben’s not so much the blogging type of guy, my absence from the Internet usually means radio silence on the blog front. πŸ˜‰ Anyhoo, here’s a taste of some of the things we’ve been up to:

Senior portraits in the snow…

Model portfolios with some avant-garde edge…

And, just in time for spring, some Spring/Summer fashions. (see more of these at www.alysonclair.com!)

And that’s not to mention the events we’ve had the pleasure of shooting, too! Hopefully, I’ll have time to share more in-depth looks at all we’ve been up to these past few weeks, but if not… we’re looking forward to what’s ahead, and we hope you’ll be part of it!

Also: potential Senior Reps for 2011, stay tuned! Details are coming soon!

Getting fashionable with Spirit Hoods! – fashion, commercial, and product photography in Portland, OR

We kicked off our fashion shooting for 2010 on our first week back from vacation, when model and producer Jillian Rabe–one of our favorite PDX movers-and-shakers!–brought us in to work with a truly unique new product: Spirit Hoods! This fun and funky headgear brings together features of hoods, hats, and scarves, (check the cute pockets for your hands at the bottom!) and it definitely makes a statement while keeping you toasty through the last bit of winter.

We created these photos in the expansive shooting space atΒ  SmashCut Studio in the Pearl, and really enjoyed working in the space. The shoot was a ton of fun–and really, how could it not be, with this as the product?–and the energy was off the charts! Spirit Hoods got such a great initial response that the product is already on backorder, but their web site is online, and they’ll be restocking and launching their online store really soon.

These are just a few of the shots from our session, made into promotional images for their web site.

Actor With a Side of Model – model portfolio and headshot photography in Portland, Oregon

Andrew came to us ready to kick-start his career as an actor, and was also open to modeling, so he chose one of our model portfolio packages, and we tailored the looks to fit his goals! We made his actor’s headshot our first priority, because he’s most interested in acting, and we brought in our stylist partner Tabiba Styles to make sure he had a clean and polished look from start to finish. We also explored looks inspired by commercial, fashion, and athletic styles in-studio, to show his potential in different areas of modeling, while still playing to his relaxed and easygoing attitude.

He also chose to order comp cards through us, so we hooked him up with a clean comp card layout, and a batch of 100 cards printed on high-quality stock! We’re always ready to provide headshot prints and comp cards to our clients, and we make it affordable, so you can get the most for your investment, even if you’re new to the industry. If you have several shots you love after your session’s over, ask us about our rates, and we’ll gladly add it on to your package.

A Vintage-Inspired Fall Collection – fashion, commercial, and product photography in Portland, OR

A few days ago, local designer Alyson Clair unveiled her latest collection for Fall 2009 on her web site, so now we finally get to share some of the photos!Β

We shot outside an old Vavoline building in an industrial area of North Portland, and it was a cool spot, but it also had its challenges. If we’d started shooting too early, and the outdoor light would be too harsh, but if we waited too long, the neighboring buildings would cast a huge shadow across our setting. Throw in some partly-cloudy conditions that had the sun passing behind clouds periodically, and things get a bit tricky.

That meant we had to work fast and be ready to make quick changes, which is, fortunately, never a problem when we’re doing the shooting. We shot 3 different models in multiple outfits, and finished with plenty of time to savor our Saint Cupcakes (courtesy of Alyson), and then head out to enjoy the rest of a gorgeous day.

If you like what you see, you can pick up these vintage-inspired, figure-flattering pieces at several boutiques in town. Check out the Clair Vintage Inspired web site for a closer look!

Monday Snapshot: Fall clothing gets Sweet – commercial and fashion photography in Portland, Oregon

It’s a big week for Portland fashion… because Portland Fashion Week begins in just two days! We’re particularly excited for PFW’s Thursday night showing, because one of the three designers selected for the Emerging Designers showing is one of our beloved fashion clients: Mira Fannin of Sweet Skins! Word is, she’ll be debuting an all-new collection of delicious denim, and we’re excited for her and curious to see what’ll be coming down the runway.Β

So, today’s Snapshot is a peek at the rack of clothing samples from our Fall ’09 photoshoot with Sweet Skins. Just a little homage to Fall Fashion and to Mira’s work, because it’s finally starting to feel like fall, and slipping on some warm and comfortable (and, of course, fashionable) threads is sounding pretty excellent today.Β

P.S. If you visit the Sweet Skins web site, you can snag some of the new Fall items we shot in the online shop. They’re comfortable, eco-friendly, and very cute!

FUSE: a black tie fashion fundraiser event – event and fashion photography in Portland, Oregon

Last week, we gave you a peek at Portland Fashion Synergy and its visiting guests from Henan, its ambitious goals for relations between Portland and China, and of course, its plans for a runway show unlike any other seen in Portland. Friday night was that runway show, and it was nothing short of amazing.

We’ve shot at our fair share of Portland runways, and some fashion shows seem less about the clothes, and more about creating an excuse to party until 3am. (do we need any more of those?) At some shows, there isn’t even a genuine runway… an aisle or a hallway, perhaps, but it’s more guerilla fashion than upper-crust. This is Portland, and although we have plenty of designers with forward-thinking vision, pulling together a major runway event is no simple task.

PDXFS generated a lot of buzz and made big promises for their show, and FUSE didn’t disappoint. The Kriedel Ballroom at the Portland Art Museum made the perfect venue for showcasing garments with an artistic flair, and the production value showed in the rich details of the stage, decor, and of course, the elevated runway. We’d love to see more of this kind of energy in Portland’s fashion community, so we’re looking forward to seeing what PDXFS brings our way next.

These are just a few shots from the runway show. To see more of what you might have missed, take a look at our online gallery of photos from the evening!

Scarlet at the Queen Anne Victorian Mansion – event & fashion photography in Portland, OR

We had a great time shooting at Scarlet: A Vintage Fashion & Antique Car ShowΒ this past Sunday! The runway show was beautiful, and the Queen Anne Victorian MansionΒ made the perfect venue for an elegant event.

We also had the opportunity to shoot with the runway models at the Mansion before the show, and it was a truly amazing location! The inside of the mansion especially caught our eye, and it’s a place that really has to be seen to be believed. If you’re getting married in 2010, this is definitely a venue worth checking out… we had a lot of fun shooting there!

Here’s a shot from the runway show, and one of the photos from our Pre-show shooting.Β All of our photos from the show are online for downloading and print orders, so be sure to check them out!

Back to Fashion – commercial and fashion photography in Portland, OR

After taking a fairly long break from straight-size fashion collaborations, we finally found some time to work with an awesome team of ladies on some soft and lovely fashion images! We were lucky enough to have the talents of Ambrosia Carey–our hairstylist forΒ our November 2008 PLUS Model Magazine editorial–on hair and makeup, two skilled models from Portland agencies, and two amazing local designers!

Here are a couple of the images we’ve cooked up so far, featuring one-of-a-kind designs by Emily Sunnell. Her line, Emilia Kaye, is focused around romantic and raw garments made from reconstructed clothing, and she loves putting energy into quirky and unique details that speak volumes.Β

Models: Sofie (Mode) and Iris (Ryan Artists)

If you’re a fan of Last Thursday on Alberta, keep an eye out for these two girls: you might see Sofie selling her own works, and Iris bakes some killer gluten-free cookies! (we should know, she brought some to the shoot!)

Portland fashion photography

We gave you a small taste of our men’s fashion photoshoot featuring mens’ designs by Adam Andreas, and it’s high time we showed you more! Here’s a couple more shots of his relaxed-and-groovy button-down shirt, and then some photos featuring a cool, slim pant and one of his uniquely ambitious jacket designs. We’re definitely looking forward to working with him again, and looking further into his creative perspective on men’s clothing!

Creative, Conceptual Portraits

Conceptual photography is some of the most fun work we get to do: it gives us the chance to really explore the looks we can achieve with lighting, style, and setting. And when we can share that with you through a creative portrait? Even better!

We had the chance to take things towards the dark side, when we got together with Annalee, Tony, and Marius for this Alternative-Bride theme. We had the talents of Sabrina Cayne with us for makeup and styling, and we took this shoot to a great location, as the sun was getting low in the sky. Shooting outdoors in such low light can yield some very cool looks, and the clouds in the sky that evening were an amazing fit with the moody feel of the concept.

And, yes, we can do shots like these, or something completely different, for you! Include makeup and hair in your portrait package, and we can create a great variety of looks. Add on a wardrobe stylist, and there’s a whole wealth of ideas we can mine.
